Artist Statement
Direct experience in the outdoors is the cornerstone of my practice. Whether it be through painting en plein air, photographs, or spending time with the scientists who study the environment I find myself in, my process starts from a place of informed engagement. Spending time with the subject is a form of care for the environment and, ultimately, an act of advocacy for the land and its ecological systems.
While my primary practice consists of oil and gouache paintings, photography and mapping run parallel to developing my work. A final piece is developed not just from one study or observation, but rather from a myriad of experiences from time spent on location, along with photographs. Subject matter varies depending on the location; my current interests are focused on night skies and birds. Ultimately, I want to leave the viewer more curious about the land in which they find themselves.
